Hector Santos, age 62, of Pompano Beach Florida after a long struggle with cancer passed away on January 12th at approximately 9:30 am at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Miami Beach FL.
Hector was born in New York City on July 31, 1961 to Maria Isabel and Domingo Santos. He is survived by his siblings Domingo, David, and Orlando with whom he enjoyed his early years. He is also survived by nieces and nephews who include Christabelle, Raymond Raisabell, David Jr. and James.
At the age of 17, Hector left Puerto Rico for New York City where he emancipated and began living his life. First and foremost, Hector lived his life his way!
In 1992, (At age 31) he moved to Phoenix joining his brothers Domingo, and later Orlando. While in phoenix he not only did he develop entrepreneurial skills, but also enjoyed cooking Puerto Rican, Mexican, and other cuisines, making memories with his brothers, and enriching the lives of family and friends alike.
Around 1999-2001, (Roughly age 39) he decided to relocate to Florida so that he would be closer to his Mom and Dad who lived in Puerto Rico. Not long after, our mom was diagnosed with cancer. His good will and caring attitude allowed him to spring into action coordinating medical care, housing, and tireless support as she battled this horrible disease which ultimately took her life as well.
To lighten things up, I would like to share and invite you to share some amusing memories about Hector. One of my favorites is the effort that he put into leaving home (As we all did). In his effort to make money, he must have raffled a macramé plant holder about 5 times! (The same one!!! because no one won the raffle!) He must have been destined to leave at that period because it generated the income that he needed for a plane ticket to NYC. (This is the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey)
Hector was truly loved by many friends who speak very highly of him. To this day I still believe that there were two Hectors! But come to find out, there was another side of Hector that we were not aware of which deepened our understanding of his kind and gentle heart. Which was demonstrated by those of you who spoke.
What I am profoundly proud and grateful for is that Hector developed extremely loyal friends and relationships. Honestly, we were not aware of how deeply he touched and was touched by others. Not only did he impact the life of family and friends, he also contributed to his community by providing guidance and advice to those requiring social services, volunteering, and delivering food to the needy through special programs. These actions not only summarize but epitomize his life’s accomplishments.
I will close with the following statement conveyed by a friend: "There's not a tear that You waste, You take it and You turn it into something better." Health has been restored to Hector and he has started on a new journey. He will never be far away because he loves you and love never ends.
